Representative Cricket Matches on the Rec

The reputation of our facilities in the village has been enhanced as theRec has played host to two representative cricket games. Having quality teams playing cricket on the Rec showcases the sport to those in our village and encourages them to emulate. And the Rec gains a little revenue!

The first game, on May 23rd, was between The All Ireland Ladies a Xl whose county championship match against Leicestershire had been cancelled at short notice. Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Ladies are a newly formed side trying to qualify for next year’s county championship and were delighted to offer a friendly fixture for the Irish Ladies. Starting at 12.00 after extensive warm ups and preparation the Irish ladies batted solidly against a Cambs attack that was giving all its bowlers the opportunity to demonstrate their skills against quality opposition. After 50 overs, the visitors had amassed 275 for 5. The last partnership was very satisfying for the coaching staff of the visitors as two promising young teenagers added 65 undefeated.

In reply Cambs were never quite up with the required run ate and the situation was not helped by the run out of their leading batter (seen in action in the first picture). Despite all this they still achieved 198 for 8. a highly credible performance for a recently assembled side, containing many who had never played a 50 over a side game before, against a very highly organised and focused team of international aspirants.

At the end of the game the tourists had to depart for their next day match (again 50 overs) against Suffolk (who they beat) in the County Championship. Both sides enthused over the facilites and the quality of the pitch. All Histonians and Impingtonites hearing this glowed with reflected pride! Cambs Ladies return to the Rec on Saturday June 10th for a match against an Essex County Xl.

On Sunday May 30th the Cambridgeshire under 13 Boys Xl played against the Lincolnshire Under 13 Xl. Despite the best efforts of local coach for the cambridge side the total of 218 off 45 overs was just too little as Lioncolnshire requiring three to win off the last ball scored a four for victory.

A big 'thank you' goes to Hollyoak Veterinary Surgery in Impington for their financial and technical support. Without it this website would not be possible.
