IVC to convert to an academy

The governing body at Impington Village College this week decided to continue with the process of conversion to an academy. It did this following a period of consultation which ended 6 Jul 11.

The governors made their decision to proceed towards conversion whilst determined to preserve the College’s distinctive character which embodies the community ethos espoused by Henry Morris. The governing body has therefore made the conversion conditional on its satisfaction that the governance arrangements will protect and enhance that ethos.

The governors also recognised how important it is to engage with the community during the process of conversion. It had received a petition asking for the recent consultation to be extended and although it did not feel that that was appropriate it did agree to a continuing program of engagement and further public meetings before the final irreversible conversion decision is made.

The working party which has developed the case for conversion (and whose recommendations are available on the IVC website) will continue to meet and will specifically address:

* the requirement to ensure the right governance for the College; and

* the need to engage with the community throughout this process.

Martin Rigby, chair of governors, said that he was pleased with the progress and took the opportunity to thank everyone who had contributed to the consultation. He said: ‘This is an important step for the College and we are committed to using the change of status to enable it to retain and build further upon what makes it distinctive and successful. We are an international, innovative and inclusive school and becoming an academy will underpin these characteristics.’

Rob Campbell, principal, thanked governors and staff for the hard work that had gone into the process so far. He noted that other schools which have become academies had, unlike IVC, chosen to consult after making the decision to convert. He said: ‘IVC has consulted early in the process and will continue to actively engage. It is a community school and will continue to reflect the values and ethos that go with being at the heart of its community.’

There’s more information about IVC and its plans to convert to an academy on the IVC website www.impington.cambs.sch.uk.

Local homelessness charity Emmaus Cambridge will be holding a One Day Half Price Solidarity Sale with a truly International flavour on Saturday 16th July as a continuing part of the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of our founding.

People may remember that last year we held a one day sale and invited other Emmaus communities from the UK to join us.  This year we are going one better and in addition to the UK Communities who are coming to join us, we will also be joined by some of our friends from Communities in Europe.  This will give people the opportunity to experience the truly international flavour of Emmaus by talking to them and seeing what life in Emmaus means for them.

The charity, which provides home and work for previously homeless people and those wanting to live in a community environment is hoping that people involved over the years will join us in our celebration.  All funds raised on the day will go to support the work of Emmaus International.  For those of you who have not yet visited us, we would encourage you to come and see what you are missing.  For those people who have supported us over the last twenty years we would like to say a huge thank you!

More information will be available on our posters, our website www.emmauscambridge.org or at the shop so please come and join us at the Community on Green End, Landbeach, Cambridge CB25 9FD from 9am to 5pm.  Call us on 01223 863657 or email info@emmauscambridge if you would like more information.

HI Courier Newspaper and DIGITAL editions

July 3, 2011 by

The next issue of the HI Courier NEWSPAPER is scheduled for publication on Thursday 14th July – right after Feast Week. This will be our annual summer issue.  We do not publish in August because so many of our volunteers are on holiday.  Publication of the newspaper will start again on 8th September.

However, the DIGITAL Edition (Website) will continue as usual throughout the summer. It is updated daily or as warrated   It reports village news 365 days a year!  To keep up with the latest news and event information go to www.hicourier.co.uk To get village news e-mailed to your inbox be sure to subscribe by entering your email address into the box in the upper right corner of the page.  We also have an RSS news feed for those using desktop news readers.

The NEWSPAPER edition is still the favourite of most people in the village. The deadline for the July-August issue is 6th July.  If you would like to submit an article or photos of Feast Week but they won’t be available until after this date then please let me know.  If you can tell me what to expect (approximate number of words and number of photos) then I will do my best to save space for it.

Our website www.HIcourier.co.uk is updated as warranted.  We have a e-mail subscriber list of over 400 villagers.  Whenever an announcement or news item is posted on the website an e-mail is sent to each and every one of those subscribers on the same day.  The HI Courier started out as a web based publication then branched out into a monthly newspaper.  Unfortunately many of the great features of the website have not been well used.  If your organisation wants to promote an event or issue a last minute reminder to the village you can do so in several different ways:  1- send an email to mail@hicourier.co.uk and ask for it to be posted on the website; 2 – link your website to ours using an RSS link; 3 – become a volunteer ‘author’ and log onto the HIcourier website to upload your news and photos at your convenience 24/7.  Contact me if you are interested.  We have some great features built into the website which unfortunately have been  underused for nearly three years.

Lost Cat – ‘Murray’ spotted near Histon (PetSpotters Alert)

July 2, 2011 by

Murray is a Siamese type neutered male, whose been missing since 12th June approx. He is cream coloured with black tail and ears; rather thin but quite healthy and active. We have put up posters around Girton and on Thursday evening, 30 June, someone called and said they’d seen a cat matching his description on the road out of Girton going towards Histon around Manor Farm Road. We went and searched but had no luck. If you have someone in that area who would also keep a look out for him, we’d be very grateful. He is not micro chipped although if he comes back I’ll get it done! He’s been through several collars and in the end I gave up trying to get him to wear one. Both our cats are on record at Hollyoaks; our phone number is 01223 565401. Heather Pike, 4 Mayfield Road, Girton.

Heat Wave Possible Next Few Days

June 26, 2011 by

The Met Office has issued a level 2 warning for increasing temperatures over the next several days.  Temperatures are predicted to rise to just over 30C Monday and Tuesday.  Clear skies will also present a potential sun burn risk.  Please take care.  Wear sunscreen if you are out in the sun and drink plenty of water.

NHS website http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Summerhealth/Pages/Heatwave.aspx has complete details.

Who might be affected?  The NHS advises:

The main risks posed by a heatwave are:

  • dehydration (not having enough water)
  • overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
  • heat exhaustion
  • heatstroke

A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people in extreme heat are:

  • older people, especially those over 75
  • babies and young children
  • people with a serious chronic condition, especially heart or breathing problems
  • people with mobility problems, for example people with Parkinson’s disease or who have had a stroke
  • people with serious mental health problems
  • people on certain medications, including those that affect sweating and temperature control
  • people who misuse alcohol or drugs
  • people who are physically active, for example labourers or those doing sports

The following advice applies to everybody when it comes to keeping cool and comfortable and reducing health risks:

  • Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. If it’s safe, open them for ventilation when it is cooler.
  • Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don’t go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) if you’re vulnerable to the effects of heat.
  • Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn’t possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).
  • Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
  • Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.
  • Stay tuned to the weather forecast on the radio or TV, or at the Met Office website.
  • Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need.
  • Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.
  • Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors.
  • Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.

If someone feels unwell, get them somewhere cool to rest. Give them plenty of fluids to drink.

If symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps get worse or don’t go away, seek medical help.

A helpful NHS booklet on Heatwaves can be found at http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Summerhealth/Documents/Looking%20after%20yourself%20and%20others%20during%20hot%20weather2010.pdf
