OPEN MEETING THURSDAY 7 MAY 8pm
RECREATION GROUND CENTRE COMMUNITY ROOM
The play area on the village Recreation Ground is the largest and most popular play area in the villages of Histon and Impington, and over the decades many thousands of village children have spent countless hours of fun swinging, climbing, scrambling, and sliding there.
In the last fifteen years there has been little money spent on the play area equipment, as a result the costs of maintenance are increasing and at some time a substantial sum of money will be required to replace equipment which is showing increasing signs of ageing. We are also entering a period of time when funding available to Government and Councils will become increasing limited.
The Recreation Ground Committee believes that there is now a unique opportunity to redevelop the play area with new equipment that children aged from 0 to 13 can enjoy in the future.
Cambridgeshire County Council is about to commence phase two of its Cambridgeshire Play Pathfinder project which is funded by central government. This scheme has been set up to deliver new, creative and inspiring play spaces in the County, and Phase two is focussing to provide play facilities for 8 to 13 year olds.
The Recreation Ground Committee are eligible to apply for the funding of equipment for 8-13 year olds but strongly believes that it is an opportunity to improve and add to the play facilities for Under 8s as well. The potential whole project cost is about £65,000, additional sources of funding have been identified but some local fundraising will be necessary. The success of the project is dependent on grant applications being successful, the potential project timetable is tight but if successful the new facilities could be in place by Spring 2010.
Local children and young people will be involved in the development and design processes of the play area scheme hopefully through village schools.
A Rec Play Area Project group is being formed which will coordinate the consultation, design and fundraising. If the project is to succeed volunteers will be needed to become involved in the group, and the open public meeting on Thursday 7 May will provide more information. Please do come and support this exciting village project.

Get on Your Bike – May 4th

Would you like to spend the early May Bank Holiday – Monday 4th May 2009 – on your bike cycling out into the countryside but with a purpose? The Camcycle 20/50 provides an opportunity to do just that.
The ride sets off from Midsummer Common in Cambridge from 9.30am in groups led by marshals, with the first destination being Reach Fair, around 10 miles from Cambridge. The route is off-road and on quiet roads (using the National Cycle Network) and the pace will be leisurely, to make it suitable for families with confident child cyclists. Riders should easily arrive in Reach in time for the opening of the fair at noon. There is then a choice of staying at the Fair and setting off back to Cambridge around 2pm; or, after the opening of the fair, continuing via Wicken Fen to Ely before returning to Cambridge, a total distance of 50 miles.
The ride is organised by the Cambridge Cycling Campaign and is supported by Bike Week and by Cycle Cambridge, the Cycling Demonstration Town project which aims to improve facilities and conditions for cyclists in Cambridge and the necklace villages (including Histon and Impington).
No advance booking is required; just turn up on the day and join in. More details can be found at www.camcycle.org.uk/events/rides/ along with a map of the route.

Welcome to the NEW Village Newspaper Website!

We are very pleased to introduce you to the new Histon Impington Courier website. What is the ‘HI Courier’ ?It’s the replacement for the defunct ‘Crier’ – but much better. While you’re reading the web version there will soon be a regular monthly newspaper edition as well. The difference between the old Crier and the new Courier is this: The Courier is community owned and operated. It’s not a commercial venture that needs to make a profit. Therefore, it will be here as long as the community sees it as a valuable source of news and information.
Who writes the stories that appear in the web version of the Courier? Simple: YOU DO. Any public or not-for-profit organisation will be able to post a story directly from their computers 24 hours a day! Or perhaps you have a hobby or other interest that you want to tell villagers about. Or perhaps you are planning a special event and want to invite everyone. The HI Courier is your noticeboard. We will be publishing more details shortly. In the meantime, please contact Ken at webeditor@hicourier.co.uk for more information.
A Quick Tour

Our front page may look rather bare at the moment. It will fill up rapidly as we get you to help us write stories and submit photos and videos. In the meantime we have some sample news stories so you get an idea of how it works.
Let me point out a few features that you might miss at first glance. On the top of the page you will see a menu bar that reads “home headlines weather etc”. Click on one of those and you’ll find a lot of very current information.
For example, there are almost 200 headline stories from around the UK and world that are being continuously updated throughout the day.
Wondering what the weather will be like on Thursday? Click our ‘Weather’ section to find out.
There’s a transport section that gives you ‘live’ train schedules updated every 2 minutes! It has information for trains arriving and departing from both Cambridge and Waterbeach.
Our Calendar section lists local events and meetings. You can add your own public event right from your computer screen, too!
And our Directory lists all the local services and businesses in Histon and Impington.
On the upper right side there’s a place to subscribe to the HI Courier by email. You’ll get an an e-mail whenever there is a new story on the website (one email per day).
That’s just a ‘taster’. There’s more to come.
If you have ideas or would like to volunteer time to help make the Courier project a success, please contact Denis Payne denis@dwpayne.net or Ken webeditor@hicourier.co.uk

Green Makeover Announcement
February 9, 2009 by wfr.editor

Today’s Guardian is carrying a story detailing plans for a ‘Green Makeover’ for up to a quarter of UK homes. (see article)
“The campaign is thought to involve giving 7m houses and flats a complete refit to improve insulation, and will be compared to the 10-year programme that converted British homes to gas central heating in the 1960s and 1970s. Householders could also be encouraged to install small-scale renewable and low-carbon heating systems such as solar panels and wood-burning boilers.”
The announcement is expected Thursday. Climate campaigners will be looking at the level of funding and the designated funding areas to assess the effectiveness of the initiative. Estimates of the required funding range from £2-12 Billion each year for the next ten years.
We should have a better idea of what this means for our villages when the official announcement is made on Thursday.
