Over 300 village residents thronged last Saturday’s kick-off to the Greening campaign at the Histon Baptist Church hall. Every age was represented as residents checked out stalls offering activities, practical advice and refreshments. Reverend James Blandford Baker opened the campaign with a short greeting followed by a drama put on by IVC students, then a rousing ’10 days of Greening’ song composed and sung by members of Choir2000, and finally music from the Salvation Army. Stalls also filled the outside areas representing Cycling groups and the Scouts.
Greening pledge cards have all been distributed and many are already appearing in windows. The campaign will last for six weeks when a tally of cards will provide us with the total amount of CO2 saved during the campaign. Special thanks go to the Cambridge Community Foundation, Microsoft Research, Hollyoak Veterinary Surgery and numerous individuals who helped make the Greening launch so successful.

Histon and Impington are taking action! In the next few days volunteers will be distributing Greening window cards to every home in the two villages to encourage residents to reduce their CO2 emissions. After a number of small actions have been completed residents are asked to display the card in their windows. At the end of the six week campaign these will be tallied to determine the amount of CO2 saved.
The Greening campaign began in Petersfield, Hampshire, where it was so successful that since then many other communities in that county have started to address the problem of reducing their carbon footprint. Histon and Impington are the first villages in Cambridgeshire to take up the challenge.
The actions on the card were selected by villagers at a meeting on the 14th January as 10 easy ways for us all to cut our carbon emissions. For the next five weeks we are asking you to consider taking on 5 of the actions specified on the card; when you have ticked them, please display the card in a window that can be seen from the street. During the week of March 30th we will be coming round to count up the cards displayed and when we have added them up, we will work out how much CO2 has been saved. We will announce this figure at 12am on the village green in Histon on Saturday 4th April.
To find out more about the campaign and to explore the ideas behind it we are holding a launch event on 28th February from 2-4pm in the Baptist Church Histon. Throughout there will be stalls offering activities, practical advice and refreshments; then at 3pm Reverend James Blandford Baker will launch the campaign with music, film and drama to follow. Schools, faith groups and many village organisations are taking part and it should be a fun afternoon. There will be a toy swap stall (please bring toys along), a human snakes and ladders game, craft activities, competitions, a master composter and lots more… The event will be free of entry.
We will also be running a stall at the Farmers’ Market from 9.30-12.30 on Saturday 21st March.
This is only the beginning. Later phases could be more ambitious – a renewable power project; a community allotment; a Parish Plan which takes into account Climate Change Impacts. We hope you’ll join us in making the change happen.
